With Valentine’s Day around the corner, we thought we would use the opportunity to talk about relationships and how you can strengthen them, both within the workplace and at home.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, one definition of a relationship is “the way in which two or more people or groups regard and behave towards each other.”
We engage with numerous people every day, including our bosses, colleagues, customers, spouses, siblings and children. Some relationships are just beginning, while others have been part of our lives since we were born.
We also behave differently in our various relationships and naturally relate to some people better than others. We’ve all experienced a co-worker who takes charge, makes decisions and delegates responsibilities. They are focused on achieving results and are often held in high regard for doing so. Then there’s the friend who always invites you around for a cup of tea and a biscuit, listens to your problems and knows exactly what to say to make you feel supported. Or perhaps you have a partner who drives you mad because they spend hours visiting shops, reading online reviews and comparing prices before buying a toaster!
Each of these people has their own behavioural style and motivations. We also react differently to each person based on our own behavioural style, motivators and stressors.
Do you understand your own behavioural style?
But do you know the real you? What are your own motivators and stressors? Once you understand these, you can identify what you need from your relationships and what others may need from you.
Emotional connection is a core part of being human. Understanding our own needs and the needs of others can therefore play an important role in building stronger relationships and creating better workplaces.

No behavioural style is better than another, and every style has its strengths. After all, the world would be a boring place if we were all the same! You can’t change other people, but you can increase your understanding of them. You can also learn to adapt your behaviour to connect more effectively. This might mean turning certain behaviours up or down depending on the person or situation. The aim isn’t to change who you are. Instead, it is about making small adjustments that can help you communicate more effectively and avoid unnecessary frustration. Of course, it doesn’t mean you will always get it right. Relationships take time, effort and understanding.
However, developing and maintaining good relationships means less time and energy is wasted overcoming unnecessary obstacles. When an issue arises, you can adapt your approach and resolve it more efficiently, with better communication and an approach that works for everyone involved.
