What is Everything DiSC?

“Everything DiSC is a tool designed to support an individuals’ understanding of their work related behaviours, the behaviours of others and how to apply this knowledge in work situations.”

It’s possible to have a stronger, more efficient work team. What’s the secret? Everything DiSC. This video demonstrates the power of Everything DiSC and the impact it can bring to your company.

It is a simple and memorable model. DiSC is an acronym for the four primary disc personality types (Dominance, influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness) that make up this model of human behaviour and help people understand, “Why they do what they do.”

You can always recognise our DiSC by the signature lower-cased ”i” in DiSC, which differentiates Everything DiSC from other DISC models within the marketplace.

DiSC profiles are simple to use for both the administrator and the respondent. You will receive an online DiSC assessment asking you to answer a simple questionnaire about your own behaviour, rating your answers on a scale from strongly agree to strongly disagree. There are no right or wrong answers! The questionnaire takes approx 20 minutes. The DiSC profile reports on DiSC behaviour, by measuring attributes, preferences and aspects of the respondent’s disc personality.   Responses are then collated, scored electronically and displayed by a dot on the circumplex model. As well as being divided into the 4 DiSC personalities, the model is further segmented into 12 segments.  Everyone is a blend of all four DiSC personality types and all styles are equally valuable. The personalised report also includes information about other DiSC styles so you’ll learn more about others as well and strategies of how to communicate more effectively with each style.

DiSC measures your personality and behavioral style. It does not measure intelligence, aptitude, mental health or values. DiSC profiles describe human behaviour in various situations, for example how you respond to challenges, how you influence others, your preferred pace and how you respond to rules and procedures. It does not measure every dimension of your personality.

How the DiSC profile began

For over 40 years, the DiSC profiles have been researched and developed with customers’  needs in mind, to provide innovative solutions to a variety of organisational issues.
1928 - Dr William Moulton Marston first developed the DiSC model in his book, Emotions of Normal People

From his research, Marston theorised that the behavioural expression of emotions could be categorised into four primary types, stemming from the person’s perceptions of self in relationship to his or her environment. These four types were labelled by Marston as Dominance (D) Inducement (I), Submission (S) and Compliance (C). He created a model that integrated these four types of emotional expression into a two-dimensional, two-axis space. Marston never created a psychological instrument to measure his model, but the contemporary understanding of DiSC maintains some of the core principles advanced by Marston, with some additional and changes informed by advances in psychological measurement and theory.

1940 – The History of DiSC measurement began

Walter V.Clarke, an industrial psychologist began building a test for use in personnel selection, called the Activity Vector Analysis. Clarke identified a list of adjectives that were commonly used to describe others. After collecting and analysing the data, he discovered that the four factors produced from the data (aggressive, social, stable and avoidant) sounded a lot like DiSC. The participant’s responses were scored on a scale and the scores were then plotted in clusters. Fifteen (patterns) emerged, it was these 15 patterns that formed the basis of interpreting the scores.

1950 - Early measurement of DiSC Concepts

John Cleaver a staff member of Clarke’s, developed the Activity Vector Analysis as an adjective checklist, but evolved into a 24 tetrad, forced-choice instrument. This produced two factors that closely approximated the Marston model, lending support to the claim that a DiSC-based instrument could be created.

1970 – John Geier created the original Personal Profile System (PPS).

Geier, a faculty member in the University of Minnesota’s Department of Health Sciences, formed a company called Performax (which became Inscape Publishing). His main contribution was not so much in the area of instrument development, but in further understanding the 15 basic patterns previously discovered. He developed richer descriptions of these patterns which became known as the Classic Profile Patterns.

1994 – The Personal Profile System 2800 Series (PPS 2800) was created

The DiSC instrument had basically remained unchanged since 1959, so improvements began in the form of new items added and the reliability of the instrument was increased. The new PPS had 28 tetrads, which is where the name developed, although since became DiSC Classic.

2000 - How the Graph became a dot

Inscape began experimenting with ways to represent DiSC with a circumplex model instead of a line graph model. A person’s DiSC style then became represented as a dot within the DiSC map. The circumplex model helps individuals develop a broader understanding of themselves and also appreciate the differences in other people’s behavioural styles, to build more effective relationships. The advantage of this representation was ease of visual interpretation and application.

2007 - 2011 – Everything DiSC applications as follows were created

This first application focussed on helping the learner understand the relevance of his or her DiSC style to a particular role, within the organisation. Focussing on understanding DiSC style, understanding customer buying styles and adapting your sales style to customer’s buying style. Click for more information on the Everything DiSC Sales Profile

Everything DiSC 363 for Leaders

After three years of research, the Everything DiSC 363 for Leaders profile was launched, view here. The 360 degree assessment is supported by the DiSC model. Leaders are evaluated on 24 behaviours, for example finding opportunities or showing diplomacy.

Everything DiSC Work of Leaders

This report was based on extensive research. This report splits the work of leaders into the following categories: Vision, Alignment and Execution. Using self-ratings of 18 different traits, participants are taught why some leadership behaviours are natural to some and others require more effort, view here.

2012 – Implementation of adaptive testing

Wiley acquires Inscape and they develop innovative solutions and adaptive testing is introduced. Adaptive testing means the respondent completing a DiSC assessment will be asked additional questions to reduce ambiguity in their results. This improves the accuracy of results and makes the creation of the DiSC profile more personalised and relevant.

2017 – Everything DiSC Productive Conflict

Everything DiSC Productive Conflict helps learners curb destructive behaviour so that conflict can become more productive, ultimately improving workplace relationships and hence results. More information here.
