Well with Valentine’s day around the corner, we thought we would use this opportunity to talk about relationships and how you can strengthen your relationships both within the workplace and at home.
According to the Oxford dictionary one definition of ‘relationship’ is ‘the way in which two or more people or groups regard and behave towards each other.’
We engage with numerous stakeholders on an everyday basis, including your boss, work colleague, customer, spouse, sibling or children to name a few. Some new relationships are just being developed and some have been formed since you were born. We respond differently in our behaviour with the different relationships we have and relate to some people better than others. We’ve all experienced a co-worker who takes charge, makes all the decisions and delegates all the responsibilities and is held in high esteem of obtaining results. A friend who always invites you around for a cup of tea and a biscuit to listen to your problems and knows just what to say to make you feel supported, or a partner that drives you mad as they spend hours visiting stores, reading online reviews and researching comparable prices just to buy a toaster! Each of these people have their own behavioural style and motivation and we react differently to each one, based on our own behavioural styles and what our individual motivators and stressors are.
But do you know the real you? What are your own motivators and stressors? Once you establish this you know what you need from each of your relationships and what they need from you? Emotional connectivity remains a core part of being human so understanding these needs can be instrumental in building stronger relationships and building better workplaces.
