Whether you undertake the process in-house or through recruitment agencies, the recruitment process can be tedious – sifting through hundreds of applications, difficult to make a decision and a huge drain on resources, but unfortunately it’s a necessity.

There are numerous questions to ask before hiring new employees;

  • How do we attract the right people?
  • How well they will do the job itself?
  • Will they fit with the rest of the existing team in place?
  • Will they adapt to the organisational culture?
  • How to get the best performance from them?
  • How do we keep them satisfied to secure their future within the organisation?

In addition to this everyone wants a quick decision, not least in case the best candidates slip through the net.

But hiring in any situation can be risky and needs careful consideration. According to the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC), 85% of HR decision-makers admit their organisation has made a bad hire.” So it’s no wonder that UK businesses are wasting billions each year because of mistakes with hiring the wrong employees.

Get the full picture

As you know, CVs and traditional interviews only give you a snapshot of that person’s true personality.

A very successful way to reduce the length of the hiring process, uncover some of the hidden traits and reduce the risk of the decision process for employers is to include a psychometric test as part of the recruitment process. Last year approximately 80% of US Fortune 500 and 75% of UK Times 100 companies used a psychometric test as part of the hiring process.

There are a variety of different psychometric tests available but NOT all of them are suitable for recruitment. If they are “type” based – such as Myers Briggs and Insights – then they were not designed for this purpose.

Everything DiSC is a trait-based assessment, so the DiSC assessment can highlight how people differ in their motivations and workplace priorities, which can be extremely beneficial.

How DiSC works

Candidates are provided with adjectives or phrases and asked to choose which they feel apply to them the most and the least.

The responses are then categorised into one of four DiSC personalities:

  • Dominance
  • influence
  • Steadiness and
  • Conscientiousness

The system provides a unique DiSC profile to portray how an individual may behave.

Employers can review this highly detailed DiSC profile and pose the questions:

  • Can their behaviours integrate with the team?
  • Is that behavioural style currently lacking and hence would be a good addition and how can we get the best out of this person as an employer?

Staff retention

Having the best fit obviously also leads to higher employee retention rates. This is because job satisfaction is higher when your job engages your strong personality traits. This means the likelihood of the process having to be repeating again in a short period of time and reduce cost on resources of retraining and upsetting team dynamics is drastically reduced.

Everything DiSC will support you in getting a better overall evaluation of a candidate’s suitability, providing you with a better-informed business decision, so you reduce the risk in securing the best fit for the role and the organisation.

Choose Everything DiSC for recruitment because it is:

We are recruiting a whole new team, they’ll be working on a project that is key to the development of Work Place Learning Centre. It’s a project we need to move quickly on. We need to be sure that the people we appoint not only have the correct job skills and experience but that they are also going to gel quickly into a coherent and effective team. Using the DiSC profiles has given us an opportunity to see beyond the information on the CV and discuss with each candidate the sort of work that they really want to do, how they want to work and who they want to work with. I am confident that as a result of using DiSC we will have a team that will value and respect each other and be fully performing in no time at all. They’ll be having a lot of fun as well!

Remember the psychometric test should not be used as the sole resource for hiring, we would always advocate the DiSC profiles be used as part of a wider recruitment assessment strategy. But the DiSC profile report can be used to provide further prompting for discussion throughout the interview, allowing you to analyse the candidate’s response.

Reassurance

Candidates sometimes feel uncomfortable about the intrusion of completing a personality profile and its relevance to their capability to do the role.

They need to be reassured that there is no good or bad personality. Explain that, not only will they learn more about themselves, but they may learn the role wasn’t a good fit for them after all, so they wouldn’t have been satisfied with the position!

Many make the mistake of only hiring those with similar personalities, but every great team needs a diverse range of personality profiles to be effective and not be stereotyped.

The employer should use knowledge of the DiSC profiles to adapt behaviours accordingly. If the DiSC profiles of the candidate and the rest of the current team are shared, this improves the induction process and gives the whole team valuable knowledge to increase their performance working together right from the outset.

In order to ensure that the DiSC profiles are being represented correctly for both the interests of the candidate and the organisation, an trained DiSC Facilitator would be recommended to carry out this process.

If you would like to consider using the DiSC profiles to recruit the right employees or if you’re interested in becoming trained to use the DiSC profiles yourself, contact us and we will be happy to talk through your options.
