How to Motivate Different DiSC® Styles at Work

Why does one employee thrive on a stretch target while another finds it overwhelming? Why does public praise energise one person and make another want to disappear? Because people aren’t wired the same way. What motivates one person can frustrate the next. The challenge for managers is motivating individuals without becoming a completely different manager for every person in the team.

That’s where Everything DiSC® comes in.

In this blog:

  • Why one-size-fits-all motivation falls flat
  • How to motivate each DiSC style, with a conversation to try
  • Why the DiSC style is only the start
  • How the Everything DiSC® Management profile and Worksmart make it stick
  • How to bring DiSC into your organisation

Why one approach doesn’t work

One person loves hearing “It’s yours, run with it.” Another wants to know exactly what’s expected before they start. One lights up when their work is celebrated in front of the team. Their colleague would much prefer a quiet, sincere thank you.

Neither is wrong. But managers often motivate others the way they would like to be motivated themselves, and that’s where it goes off track.

How to motivate each DiSC style

D style: give them the outcome and the ownership. D styles value results, action and challenge. They tend to be energised by ambitious goals, real authority and visible progress. Bureaucracy, slow decisions and feeling out of control can drain them fast. Agree the outcome, then let them choose how to get there.
Try saying: “Here’s the outcome we need. How would you approach it?”

i style: give them people and possibility. People with an i style value enthusiasm, collaboration and recognition. They come alive when they can share ideas, bring others on board and hear that their contribution matters. Repetitive work and isolation can switch them off.
Try saying: “Who could we involve in this, and what would make it exciting for the team?”

S style: give them clarity and a bit of time. S styles value stability, support and sincere appreciation. They want to know their work helps others. Sudden change, unclear expectations and unnecessary conflict are the biggest drains. Don’t mistake a quieter response for low commitment. When change is unavoidable, explain what’s changing, why, and what it means for them.
Try saying: “What would help you feel confident moving forward with this?”

C style: give them the facts and the standard. C styles value accuracy, quality and expertise. They want to understand something properly before acting, and to know what good looks like. Rushed decisions, unclear standards and pressure to cut corners drain their motivation.
Try saying: “What information do you need from me to make a confident decision?”

The DiSC style is only the start

Here’s where managers often get it wrong. They learn someone is an S style and think, “Great, I know how to motivate them.” Not quite. DiSC gives you clues, not conclusions and two people with the same style won’t always want the same things. The real value is the conversation it opens. Ask what recognition means most to them. Ask when they feel most energised, what drains them, and how much direction they want from you. Then listen, and adjust.

Making it practical: the Everything DiSC® Management profile

Understanding the theory is one thing. Putting it into practice in the realities of day-to-day management is another. The Management profile is built for exactly this. It shows managers their own style, then gives tailored strategies for directing, delegating, motivating and developing each person in their team. It turns “I should probably adapt my approach” into specific things to say and do.

Keeping it going with Worksmart

A great workshop fades fast if managers are left to remember it alone. Worksmart is how we keep DiSC in use day to day, giving managers practical support in the moment when a real situation comes up, such as supporting an individual’s development, building engagement or helping them navigate change with confidence.

Pair the Management profile with Worksmart and managers get the insight and the ongoing support to apply it. That’s how you get behaviour change that lasts, rather than a profile that lives in a drawer.
